The Historic Lakeside Schoolhouse
Take a scenic stroll through Lakeside, Montana, and you’ll come across one of its most beloved landmarks—the charming Red Schoolhouse. Built in 1906, this one-room schoolhouse is one of the oldest surviving buildings in the area and offers a window into the early days of life along Flathead Lake.
In its early years, the school wasn’t just a place for learning, it was the heart of the community. Locals gathered here for Saturday night dances, potlucks, and quilting bees, making it a hub of small-town life. Generations of Lakeside children learned their ABCs within its walls, with a single teacher instructing multiple grade levels under one roof.
Today, the Red Schoolhouse is privately owned and lovingly preserved as a residence. Though not open to the public, it remains an important symbol of Lakeside’s past. Visitors are welcome to admire it from the road, take photos, and reflect on the generations who passed through its doors.
With its classic red exterior, original maple floors, and postcard-worthy setting near the lake, the schoolhouse is a must-see for history lovers, photographers, and anyone exploring the Lakeside area.
